HISTORICAL CONTEXT

During the turn of last century, the Mexican state of Yucatan was the world wide, number one exporter of Henequen fiber. This fiber was used to produce strings, cords and sacks that could be used in the harbors and agricultural industry of the time.

With the fortunes made from its production and exportation the henequen plantation owners started building grandiose houses and mansions, using European design, furniture and materials. Most of these houses were built along the main avenues of Mérida, the state’s capital.

El Pinar was one of the flagship mansions of those golden years and it is one of the few mansions that remains virtually intact to this day.
